Bhutanese journalists confront new challenges with creativity

A farmer’s experiment using stuffed toy tigers to frighten away menacing monkeys may prove to be the inspiration that will spark a reinvention of journalism in Bhutan, the remote Himalayan kingdom known for its daring goal to achieve Gross National Happiness (GNH). That’s the hope that sums up my recent trip to Bhutan, where I worked with some of the country’s leading newspaper, television and radio journalists.

Bhutan forges its own path for journalism

I fell in love during my last business trip. But my wife needn’t worry. It was with the country of Bhutan and its journalists. I was a guest of the Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy to help run a conference for about 20 prominent journalists, public officials and other leaders trying to grapple with the future of journalism in the country.
