The Bay Area Media Collaborative (BAMC) is Renaissance Journalism's three-year initiative to test an innovative model of collaborative, community-centered journalism. This ambitious effort seeks to inspire and support journalists from diverse news organizations to work collaboratively as they investigate the region’s most pressing problems—and in the process, produce powerful journalism with far-reaching impact. If you attended Renaissance Journalism’s launch event for its Bay Area Media Collaborative on Sept. 14, you heard journalist and author Peter Moskowitz warn that cities across the country are being battered by the forces of gentrification, and he pinned the blame on “disaster capitalism.”
The author of “How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality, and the Fight for the Neighborhood” urged reporters in Renaissance Journalism’s latest initiative to put more effort into investigating the causes—rather than just the effects—of gentrification so that residents can better understand and respond to the changes that are sweeping the region.
As part of our latest initiative, the Bay Area Media Collaborative, Renaissance Journalism is convening unique, Bay Area-wide conversations to help journalists and community residents exchange their views about the region’s housing crisis.
The effort will be organized by Spaceship Media, a nonprofit organization founded by two veteran reporters, which encourages respectful and journalism-supported dialogue to bridge divides and build trust between the media and the public.
